I finally purchased some NSP Chavant Clay from Brick in the Yard and one of their Foam sculpting armatures.
I am pretty excited about this.
I have been working with the clay for a couple of days already and right off the bat I learned something about it.
1. NSP Chavant Medium is pretty darn hard. By that I mean that it’s difficult to get off of the block. Once it is off of the block it is easier to work with. I have noticed that a cutting device (plastic butter knife) helps to cut off small chunks of the clay.
2. A heat gun works wonders: It makes the clay warm and a lot easier to work with. If you are not careful it can melt the clay, which may be desired, but I never left the heat gun on the clay for too long because I do not know if it can burn.
3. Use a Hammer: With a hammer it was a lot easier to mash larger pieces of the clay so that I can pick it off of the block.
4. Clay sculpting tools: When I first started working with the clay, I did not have any tools except for a plastic butter knife; this is definitely not the best option for carving accurate designs into the clay.
5. Creating a 3D object from 2D is a little more difficult than I thought. Make sure that you have good reference pictures that include shadows and contour lines. These will help with creating the shapes and make it easier to give the mask depth.
I am going to upload a bunch of pictures in different posts so that I can keep them separate to show the different stages of my build.
That is all for now!
